Biochemistry of Retinal Degeneration

چکیده
Hereditary primary pigmentary degeneration of the retina occurs in a number of experimental animals, the condition closely resembling retinitis pigmentosa in man (Cogan, 1950). In therat, themodeofinheritanceisasanautosomalrecessivecharacteristic (Bourne et al., 1938), whereas in man the situation is more complicated in that at least seven different forms of inheritance have been recognized. In the affected rat and dog, retinal degeneration starts about 12 days after birth although true differentiation of the rod is not completed until about 4 weeks of age (Lucas, 1954).

Cell based therapies in retinal diseases
Background Degenerative retinal diseases, including age related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and hereditary retinal dystrophies are major causes of blindness. The principal defect in these diseases is cell loss which is amenable to both cell based neuroprotective and neuroregenerative therapies. To briefly review the lines of research and potential candidates for cell based therapies among ...
متن کاملThe Study of Serum Asymmetric Dimethylarginine Concentrations in the Different Paraoxonase Phenotypes of Exudative Age-related Macular Degeneration Disease
Background and Aims: Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is a degenerative retinal disorder that causes progressive loss of central vision in older adults. The study aimed to determine the effect of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) as oxidizing metabolite and paraoxonase (PON1) activity within its phenotypes as an antioxidant agent in the development of such multifactorial disease. Mater...
متن کاملHomozygosity Mapping and Targeted Sanger Sequencing Identifies Three Novel CRB1 (Cumbs homologue 1) Mutations in Iranian Retinal Degeneration Families
Background: Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are a group of genetic disorders with high degrees of clinical, genetic and allelic heterogeneity. IRDs generally show progressive retinal cell death resulting in gradual vision loss. IRDs constitute a broad spectrum of disorders including retinitis pigmentosa and Leber congenital amaurosis. In this study, we performed genotyping studies to identify...
متن کاملCcl2/Cx3cr1-deficient mice: an animal model for age-related macular degeneration.
BACKGROUND/AIMS Senescent Ccl2-/- mice develop cardinal features of human age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Loss-of-function single-nucleotide polymorphisms within CX3CR1 are associated with AMD. METHODS We generated Ccl2-/-/Cx3cr1-/- [double-knockout (DKO)] mice and evaluated the eyes using fundoscopy routine histology, immunochemistry, biochemistry and proteomics. RESULTS At 6 weeks...
